Conversation at Marcellus's quarters, Hogwarts
*running water, then a knock, a long pause and a louder, more insistent knock before the water shuts off*

One moment!

*another long pause, then a crash of books and swearing in Russian, before the creak of a door opening*

What?

Professor!

Hello.

*a pause*

I needed help with my end of term project, and I thought that I best ask you before I forget what I needed help with. You don't mind, do you?

It's half nine on a Saturday night, Miss Mostyn. Yes. I mind. I'm only here because of bloody Hogsmeade weekend.

And definitely not mine. Go find your Head of House.

Everyone knows that Professor Weasley doesn't return from his work abroad until after curfew on Saturdays. I fear that I just cannot do that. And it's not like my questions involve Arithmancy at all. It's all about Defence.

Of course it is.

I've been doing research in the Restricted Section and three of the main volumes on this particular branch of Dark magic all refer to a book by... *a rustle of paper* Leonid Kud... Kudry... Kudryavtsev? And it wasn't there on the shelf...

Kudryavtsev, yes. I have a copy.

Oh good! It's always better to go to the source than to reference secondary sources, isn't it?

Whenever possible, yes. I suppose you wish to borrow the book.

I'd like to, yes. Is it a translated copy by any chance?

[info]dozhd

No, but there's a translation charm on it. You'd be able to work through it if you're willing to make the effort.

That's all right then. It won't be the first time that I've had to work with a translation charm. *a pause* Since all those other books referenced this one, I know it's good, but how did he discover so much about the curses?

Come in--I have to go through a shelf or two to find it.

*padding of bare feet across the floor*

Kudryavtsev had personal experience with thievery.

*quiet footsteps*

Thank you, Professor. Was he a thief or did he catch them?

He spent two decades on the streets of Kiev. Where did I put that...

*a rustle of papers*

Very good at it, as well. Thievery's an art, after all. It takes a great deal of skill and intelligence and cunning not to find yourself in an Auror's cell.

Hm..here...no, that's not it.

*sound of shifting and footsteps*

Must take a bit of thinking outside of the proverbial box. An admirable quality, I think.

Yes, well, I've a bit of experience in it as well, and I must say it's not entirely admirable.

Wait, I think perhaps I had it over here...

To be intelligent and to be able to think on your feet in an ingenuous way? Maybe it wasn't used for good, but that sort of trait is still admirable.

Hmm. Perhaps. That might be something you wish to study in your project. The ethics of thievery as juxtaposed to the harshness of the curses.
